यह दिल्‍ली का बहुत ही हरा-भरा और सुंदर इलाका है। यहां के कई लोगों ने बताया है कि इस जगह पर उन्‍होंने एक सफेद रंग के लिबास में लड़की देखी है जो लोगों से लिफ्ट मांगती रहती है और जब वे उसे लिफ्ट देते हैं तो वह अपने आप ही गायब हो जाती है।

खूनी दरवाज़ा

इसका नाम ही बता रहा है कि यह जगह कितनी डरावनी होगी। खूनी दरवाजे का यह नाम तब पड़ा जब यहाँ मुग़ल सल्तनत के तीन शहज़ादों, बहादुरशाह ज़फ़र के बेटों मिर्ज़ा मुग़ल और किज़्र सुल्तान और पोते अबू बकर को ब्रिटिश जनरल विलियम हॉडसन ने नंगा कर के गोली मार कर हत्या कर दी थी। तो यदि आप विदेशी हैं तो इन तीनों की आत्‍माओं से बच के रहिये क्‍योंकि ये अपनी बेजत्‍ती का बदला लेने के लिये उत्‍सुक रहते हैं।

जमाली कमाली मस्‍जिद

जमाली कमाली कोई दो भूतों का नाम नहीं है, यह तो दो महान सूफी संतो के नाम हैं जिन्‍हें इस मस्‍जिद में दफनाया गया था। लोग कहते हैं कि रात के समय इस वीरान जगह पर कुछ जिन आते हैं जो कि लोगों के गाल पर थप्‍पड़ मारते हैं और फिर हवा उनके पीछे पड़ जाती है।

संजय वन

संजय वन दिल्‍ली का यह जंगल भी भूतों से नहीं बच पाया है। इस जंगल में बहुत से पुराने बरगद के पेड़ हैं इसलिये यहां पर आने वाल कई शिकारी बताते हैं कि उन्‍होंने एक औरत को सफेद कपड़ों में बरगद के पेड़ के पीछे छुपते हुए देखा है।

लोथियन सेमेट्री

लोथियन सेमेट्री यह इसाइयों का कब्रिस्‍तान है जहां पर कई तरह के भूतों की कहानियां प्रचलित है, जैसे सिर कटे हुए भूत की। बताया जाता है कि यह भूत अपने जमाने में एक जवान सिपाही था जिसकी प्रेमिका ने इसको ठुकरा दिया था जिस वजह से इसने अपना सिर काट लिया। अब यह भूत अमावस्‍या की रात में यहां ठहलता है।

"Many call centre executives traveling back home from Gurgaon at night have complained that whenever they pass this tree, an invisible hand slaps them hard. Then they see an old, haggard woman running behind their vehicles. They believe the tree is haunted and I am trying to ascertain if it's true.

A White Clad Woman

A white clad woman sighted at sector 9 of Dwarka, a new colony of New Delhi, was really scary.

The eyewitness recounts: ""Near metro station of Dwarka , there is a lady in pure white sari .. who sometimes appears .. othertimes disappears while walking …she knocks the doors of the cars passing through that road … even if the car is running at a high speed … she'll run along and knock the door of your car .. If you stop the car you are gone. Shocking!"

The eyewitness one night took a person by name Vaibhav with him to confront the spectre. They drove through the winding lane and almost did see nothing until they came across an upside down autorickshaw which had a white sari clad lonely woman weeping beside it. Surprisingly she was taking snaps while bellowing.

Delhi is Haunted

In the Walled City, a number of houses are believed to be haunted. In Suiwalan, the grave of Dada Pir is said to have ghostly visitors at night. The graves of Razia and her sisters are rumoured to be haunted, and also the shrine of Baba Turkman Bayabani, after whom Turkman Gate is named. There's a masjid near Ajmere Gate (Old Delhi) where djinns are said to come and drink milk on the night of Shab-e-Barat.

 Even the capital of India, Delhi is haunted! The most eerie place in Delhi is Delhi Cantt area which is full of green and lush trees. Most of the times, people have seen a lady clad in white sari asking for lift. If you don’t stop your vehicle, she will start running swiftly with the same speed and believe it or not, people have reported her reaching ahead of them. This story has been doing the rounds for a while now. Some people claim that possibly the lady was a hitchhiker while alive; hence she waves at lonely passersby to stop.

The Home of Headless Ghosts

KHOONI DARWAJA

New Delhi, too, has its share of ghosts. The Khooni Darwaza is believed to be haunted by the three princes who were shot dead there by Lt. William Hodson in 1857. The ground around a newspaper office in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg is haunted by an old man who overturns anyone found sleeping outside. The reason is that behind it is a Muslim graveyard.



 




If you go further, towards Hindu Rao Hospital, you will hear more ghost yarns. Here, young medicos on night duty had, two years ago, reported seeing ghosts that sometimes appeared in the middle of Ridge Road. Hindu Rao, after whom the hospital is named, died a natural death, but the previous owner, William Fraser, the British Resident, was murdered at the age of 36.

Spirits of White Men and Women

Going towards Kashmere Gate, one encounters Lothian Bridge, and a road at the side of it which leads to the oldest Christian cemetery in Delhi, with graves dating back to the East India Company era. This place is also said to be haunted by spirits of white men and women who are buried there. But that doesn't prevent people from encroaching on the cemetery and actually living in it with their families. Ask them about ghosts, and they either ridicule them or sometimes solemnly affirm that all stories are not untrue. Kashmere Gate itself was believed to be haunted by a white lady who sat outside it smoking a cigarette and surprising travellers by suddenly appearing in front of them. Mercifully, the gate has been closed and a new entrance to ISBT made by knocking off a part of the old city wall. So the white lady seems to be passing her nights alone, as nobody goes past her now. Just across the road is Nicholson's Cemetery, where the legendary Brig-Gen John Nicholson is buried. He died during the Mutiny and is believed to rest fitfully. People try not going to the cemetery in the evening, but till recently, smack users and drug addicts found it a safe haven. The caretaker says he hasn't seen any supernatural activity, though a friend of his confided that he has seen many unusual things but is loath to admit so for fear of losing his job.

However, it is difficult to believe how the limitations of human perception could happen to many a dozen people who witnessed a white sari clad woman jaywalking a crowded Delhi street. People honked the woman from their cars and woman, blissfully ignorant, came under the wheels of a car and disappeared. But, on the face of the jaywalking woman incidence, it is difficult to believe a big mass of people paralysed by pareidolia. A woman ghost wearing white sari and glide around with a candle is a popular sighting in many parts of Delhi.a white sari clad woman in Delhi Cantonment. Dewan-e-Am and the Dewan-e-Khas

Just below the walls of the citadel is the shrine of Bhure Mian, whose "jalal" (fiery spiritual temper) was such that not even a bird could fly over his grave. If it did so, it just fell down dead. The saint was later appeased. Old Delhiwallahs believe that every Thursday a procession, led by the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar and his queen, Zeenat Mahal, comes out of the Lahore Gate, and after circumambulating the Red Fort, goes back inside silently.

Many years ago, the caretaker of the fort, Asghar Ali Khan, disclosed that he had seen medieval spirits in the Dewan-e-Am and the Dewan-e-Khas while on his nightly inspection. Some newspapers covered the supposed paranormal happenings but all that their photographers got was the picture of a shadowy figure, or just a blank negative.

Delhi is a great place for ghosts. They have been haunting it for centuries-or so says folklore. When Shahjahanabad was built as a new city, the ghosts were already there from the time of the Afghans, who had an old fort at the site of the one built by Shah Jahan. — at Purana Qila.

This place in New Delhi is often considered as the Most Haunted Spot in the entire city. Many have experienced 'possession' and unusual activities at this place. Can you guess this place?

Salimgarh Fort

 
Salimgarh Fort was built by Islam Shah Suri (also known as Salim Shah), son and successor of Sher Shah Suri in 1546. Located near Red Fort, Salimgarh Fort was constructed on an island of river Yamuna enclosed by rock-hard rubble masonry ramparts. But the river Yamuna shrunk over the years, thus left the fort landlocked with its lofty bastions and a few towering citadels.


Salimgarh Fort is considered as one of the most haunted places in Old Delhi. Because, the British used it as a death prison in which the leaders of Indian National Army were incarcerated in 1945. Some prisoners died within its walls and a few in the dark dungeons. The people, who keep a watch on this fort, hear the groans, the whispered conversations and the rustling of iron shackles.

The fort has now been renamed as Swatantrata Senani Smarak (Freedom Fighters' Memorial) and a memorial has been built for the freedom fighters in side the fort. The barracks where soldiers were kept as prisoners have been converted into their memorials. The memorial houses INA uniforms, personal belongings and an array of sepia-tinted photographs.

Several Mughal rulers camped here before the creation of Shahjahanabad, which includes Humayun who stayed here for three days before recapturing Delhi in 1555. In 1622 AD, Jahangir constructed a bridge and connected it to the mainland, which was later removed by the British when they built the railway line through it. Shah Jahan, the next emperor connected this fort with Red Fort and the fort finally became a state prison during the reign of Aurangzeb.

The Emperor Aurangzeb incarcerated his favourite daughter Zebunissa, in the fortress prison of Salimgarh, where she languished for twenty years until her death. The aggrieved ghost of Zebunissa haunts Salimgarh - in the moonlight she sings her own composed couplets wearing a dark veil. Zebunissa had spent the prime of her life in Salimgarh fort and it is said everything about Zebunissa's life seems shrouded in mystery. Howerver, if her poems believed to be a mirror to her heart she seems a very humane person with an indomitable pride.

Many swear there is something unnatural about Salimgarh place. An authoritative eyewitness account published as a media report, claimed: "While working at nights, I sometimes hear vicious laughter echoing off the walls of Salmigarh. But when I try to follow the sound, it fades out."

There are many others who claim to have heard footsteps of people walking about but nothing appears in the torchlight. The haunting feeling of Salimgarh permeates to its crowded neighbourhood -- the famous Chandni Chowk, Nai Sarak, and Chor Bazaar.

City of Djinns

City of Djinns is an entertaining mix of history and diary informed by a deep curiosity about the ways in which the ghosts of even the most distant past still walk in the twentieth century. On one level the reare the amusing rites of passage, the struggles with bureaucracy, the eccentricity of authors landlord, all entertainingly related. He has a way of letting you smell and feel the city. There are beautifully chiselled descriptions of a grand capital, but much of the books strength lies in his skill in peeling the historical onion and showing how New Delhi resonates with the old.



In Mehrauli, too, ghosts from the time of the Delhi Sultanate (1206 AD) are believed to practise with swords and spears at night.

विलियम डेलरिम्पल द लास्ट मुगल के कारण चर्चा में रहे। बरसों पहले उन्होंने दिल्ली पर सिटी ऑफ जिन्स(जिन्नों का शहर), ए ईयर इन दिल्ली नामक पुस्तक लिखकर ख्याति अर्जित की थी। उसके बाद दिल्ली के इतिहास से जैसे उनको प्यार हो गया। उनकी व्हाइट मुगल नामक पुस्तक की पृष्ठभूमि भी दिल्ली ही है।

दिल्ली में खंडहरों ने मुझे बहुत आकर्षित किया। शहर नियोजकों ने कंक्रीट की नई बस्तियाँ बसाने की बड़ी कोशिशें कीं, लेकिन उनके बीच किसी चौराहे पर, किसी पार्क में पुरानी ढहती मीनारों, पुरानी मस्जिदें या मदरसों के दर्शन हो ही जाते हैं। इसकी फ़सीलें अनेक राजवंशों की क़ब्रिस्तानों पर खड़ी हैं। कुछ लोगों के अनुसार दिल्ली शहर सात बार बना-उजड़ा। यह आठवाँ है। कुछ लोग इसकी संख्या पंद्रह मानते हैं तो कुछ इसकी संख्या इक्कीस तक ले जाते हैं। वैसे इस बात को लेकर सब सहमत हैं कि इस शहर के ढहते खंडहरों की संख्या असंख्य हैं।

लेकिन दिल्ली इस मामले में अनूठा है कि इस शहर में इधर-उधर इंसानी खंडहर भी बिखरे हुए हैं। ऐसा लगता है कि दिल्ली के अलग-अलग इलाकों ने अलग-अलग शताब्दियों के वजूद को संभाल कर रखा है, यहाँ तक कि अलग-अलग सहस्त्राब्दियों को भी। आज के लिए उसकी कसौटी पंजाबी शरणार्थी हैं, छोटी मारुति कारों और हर नई चीज़ की ओर आकर्षित होने वाले, उन्होंने अस्सी के दशक में दिल्ली की जीवनरेखा बनाई। लोदी गार्डेन में टहलते आपको ऐसे बुजुर्ग मिल जाएँगे जिनकी बातचीत, शैली से आपको यह अहसास हो जाएगा कि वे 1946 में ही फँसे हुए हैं यानी भारत की आज़ादी से पहले के दौर में। पुरानी दिल्ली के हिजड़े, उनमें से कुछ तो दरबारी उर्दू बोलते हैं, महान मुगलों की छाया में वे भी इस शहर में बेगाने नहीं लगते। निगमबोध घाट के साधुओं के बारे में मैंने कल्पना की कि वे इंद्रप्रस्थ के बेचारे नागरिक हैं, महाभारत की पहली दिल्ली के।

महीनों बाद जब मेरी मुलाकात पीर सदरुद्दीन से हुई तब जाकर मुझे उस रहस्य का पता चला जिससे दिल्ली में बार-बार जान लौट आती थी। दिल्ली, पीर सदरुद्दीन ने बताया, जिन्नों का शहर है वैसे तो आक्रमणकारियों ने इसे कई बार जला डाला, मगर यह शहर फिर बस गया, फीनिक्स पक्षी की तरह यह अपनी ही आग से बार-बार पैदा होता रहा। जैसी कि हिंदुओं में मान्यता है शरीर का तब तक पुनर्जन्म होता रहता है जब तक कि उसे मोक्ष नहीं मिल जाता, उसी तरह दिल्ली की किस्मत में हर शताब्दी में नए अवतार में प्रकट होना बदा था। इसका कारण यह है, सदरुद्दीन ने बताया, कि जिन्नों को दिल्ली से इतना प्यार है कि वे इसे खाली या उजाड़ नहीं देख सकते। आज भी वे हर घर में, सड़क के हर नुक्कड़ पर मौजूद हैं, बस आप उनको देख नहीं सकते, सदरुद्दीन ने बताया।

उस साल गर्मियों में दिन की झुलसा देने वाली गर्मी के बाद शाम को चलने वाली हवाओं से मौसम की गर्मी जब कुछ कम हो जाती तब मैं और ओलिविया(लेखक की पत्नी) अक्सर टहलते हुए निज़ामुद्दीन दरगाह चले जाते। वहां हम कव्वाली सुनते और तीर्थयात्रियों से बातें करते।

यह समझने में मुझे देर नहीं लगी कि दरगाह पर आने वाले ज्यादातर तीर्थयात्रियों के लिए निज़ामुद्दीन सदियों पहले मर जाने वाले औलिया नहीं थे, वे उन्हें अभी भी जीवित शेख समझते हैं, जिनसे मदद और सलाह अभी भी ली जाती है। एक बार कव्वाली सुनते हुए मैंने डॉ. जाफरी से पूछा कि क्या ऐसा सामान्य तौर पर माना जाता है।

पीर-पैगंबर कभी मरते नहीं, उन्होंने कहा। हमारा शरीर-आपका शरीर तो गल जाएगा। लेकिन पीरों के साथ ऐसा नहीं होता। वे बस परदे के पीछे ओझल हो जाते हैं।

लेकिन आप यह सब कैसे जानते हैं, मैंने पूछा।

बस अपनी आँखों का इस्तेमाल कीजिए! अपने आसपास देखिए, डॉ. जाफरी ने कहा। इस अहाते में एक बादशाह की मजार है- मोहम्मद शाह रंगीला की और एक शाहजादी की भी मजार है- जहांआरा की। सड़क की दूसरी ओर एक और बादशाह का मकबरा है- हुमायूं का। ये दोनों मकबरे निज़ामुद्दीन के मकबरे से ज्यादा खूबसूरत हैं, लेकिन उनको देखने कौन जाता है! केवल सैलानी। जो हँसते हैं, आईसक्रीम खाते हैं और जब मकबरे के अंदरख़ाने जाते हैं तो जूते उतारने के बारे में सोचते भी नहीं हैं।

जबकि यह जगह अलग तरह की है। निज़ामुद्दीन की दरगाह पर किसी को बुलाया नहीं जाता। यह एक गरीब आदमी की मज़ार है जो गुरबत में मरा। तो भी यहाँ हजारों लोग रोज़ आते हैं, अपने आँसू और जीवन की सबसे बड़ी उम्मीद लेकर। कुछ तो है कि लोग निज़ामुद्दीन के गुजरने के छह सौ साल के बाद उसकी दरगाह पर आ रहे हैं। जो भी यहाँ आता है उसे औलिया की मौजूदगी यहाँ बड़ी शिद्दत से महसूस होती है।

निज़ामुद्दीन के दीदार आपको तभी हो सकते हैं जब आपका दिल साफ हो, एक दिन हसन अली शाह निज़ामी ने बताया, जब एक शाम हम मज़ार की फर्श पर बैठे थे। यह इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि आपकी इबादत में कितनी तासीर है। कुछ उन्हें मज़ार पर बैठा देखते हैं। कोई यह देखता है कि वे दरगाह का चक्कर लगा रहे हैं। किसी को वे सपने में दीदार देते हैं। इसका कोई बंधा-बंधाया नियम नहीं है। चूँकि वे मिट्टी के इस तन से आजाद हो चुके हैं इसलिए हमारे बंधनों का उनके ऊपर कोई असर नहीं होता।

क्या आपने उनको कभी देखा है, मैंने पूछा।

अपनी इन आँखों से नहीं, निज़ामी ने जवाब दिया। लेकिन कभी-कभी जब मैं किसी इंसान का इलाज कर रहा होता हूँ या किसी बदमाश जिन्न को भगा रहा होता हूँ तब मैं उनका नाम पुकारता हूँ और तब मुझे उनकी मौजूदगी महसूस होती है...ऐसा है जैसे मैं कोई बाँसुरी होऊँ, अपने आपमें कुछ भी नहीं।

निज़ामी ने यह बताने के लिए कि निज़ामुद्दीन किस तरह अपनी दरगाह की देखभाल करते हैं यह किस्सा सुनाया। सदियों से यह परंपरा चली आ रही है कि केवल पीरज़ादे ही अपने पूर्वजों की मज़ार की सफाई कर सकते हैं। एक रात जिस मुहाफिज़ की बारी थी वह पास में ही खेले जा रहे एक नाटक को देखना चाहता था, इसलिए उसने मज़ार की सफाई का जिम्मा अपने एक दोस्त को सौंप दिया। जब पीरज़ादा लौटकर आया तो उसने देखा कि उसका दोस्त चित्त पड़ा है और झाड़ू उसके हाथ में ही है। उसने अपने साथियों को आवाज़ देकर बुलाया और सबके साथ मिलकर उसे खींचकर बाहर लाए, उसके चेहरे पर पानी के छींटे डाले। उसने बताया कि किस तरह उसने मज़ार की सफाई शुरू की कि उसने देखा मज़ार से एक बड़ी तेज़ रोशनी उठी और वह गिर गया। उसे इसके बाद कुछ भी याद नहीं। पीरज़ादे को अपनी गलती का अहसास हो गया।
